Freedom Schools were born out of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, created to empower Black communities by teaching literacy and Black history as a way to challenge segregation and voter suppression. They emerged most famously during Freedom Summer of 1964, when volunteers ran programs in churches, community centers, and homes to help people improve reading and writing skills and to learn about Black heritage and civic rights. In contrast, eras like the late 19th-century reform period or the early 1800s abolitionist period were about Reconstruction-era reforms or abolitionist activism earlier in U.S. history, and the early 21st century is tied to modern educational policy debates rather than this grassroots movement.
